Pool math, done right.

Find your gallons, dose chemicals precisely, set the right chlorine level for your stabilizer and check whether your water is corrosive or scaling.

Estimates assume the product strength shown. Add chemicals in front of a return with the pump running, one product at a time, and retest before adding more. Always follow the label.

Chlorine & stabilizer chart

The right free chlorine level depends on your CYA.

Minimum3 ppm
Target5–7 ppm
Shock level16 ppm

Minimum ≈ 7.5% of CYA, shock (algae-clearing) level ≈ 40% of CYA. Outdoor pools generally need some CYA to keep the sun from burning off chlorine.

Water balance (LSI)

Will your water etch surfaces or leave scale?

Ideal pool water chemistry chart

Target ranges for a typical outdoor residential pool. Always follow your equipment and surface manufacturers' specs.

Free chlorine
1–4 ppm

At least 7.5% of your CYA level; 3–5 ppm is a safe daily target for most outdoor pools.

pH
7.4–7.6

Acceptable 7.2–7.8. Low pH etches and stings; high pH clouds water and weakens chlorine.

Total alkalinity
80–120 ppm

Buffers pH. Salt pools and plaster often run steadier at 60–80 ppm.

Calcium hardness
200–400 ppm

Protects plaster and pebble. Vinyl and fiberglass are happy around 150–250 ppm.

Cyanuric acid (CYA)
30–50 ppm

Sunscreen for chlorine. Salt pools typically 60–80 ppm. Indoor pools need little or none.

Salt (salt pools)
2,700–3,400 ppm

Follow your cell maker’s spec — most target about 3,200 ppm.

Combined chlorine
0–0.2 ppm

Chloramines cause the “chlorine smell.” Above 0.5 ppm, shock.
